How Brenda Ortiz McGrath Is Rewiring Student Support in Public Education

TomoClub's Education Hall profiles how Brenda moves schools from waiting for a crisis to building prevention into everyday structures — predictable data cycles, SEL woven into instruction, and family partnership treated as infrastructure rather than events.

"If we wait for crisis, we've already missed the design opportunity."

The approach

Prevention, not crisis

Proactive MTSS teams review SEL indicators, attendance, behavior trends, and staff observations on a predictable cycle — built into existing structures, not added on top.

It starts in the classroom

Predictable routines, relationship-building inside instruction, brief check-ins, and treating behavior as a learning signal.

Families as infrastructure

Communication loops and shared planning so families are part of student success planning, not informed after decisions are made.

Practice informs policy

Classroom insight carried into governance through the Lynn School Committee and national women's commission leadership.

Five lessons for educational leaders

  1. 1

Map the system before you fix it

"You can't fix what you haven't mapped."

  2. 2

    Build a predictable data rhythm

"When it's built into a rhythm, patterns show up earlier."

  3. 3

    Clarify ownership

"If everyone owns it, no one owns it."

  4. 4

    Embed, don't add

"If it feels like one more thing, it won't last."

  5. 5

    Start small. Prove it works.

"We led with modeling and data, not mandates."

Bring this approach to your school or district

  1. Submit a consulting inquiry describing your current student support structures and goals.
  2. Meet for a discovery conversation to map where referral, intervention, and follow-up are working — and where they stall.
  3. Receive a tailored plan to build data rhythms, clear ownership, and embedded supports with your team.
