The coquí's song is a sound that stays with you. In this story, it becomes a bridge between memory and healing — a way for a child to carry a loved one's voice, warmth, and presence wherever life leads. It is a story about the people who stay with us, and the love that keeps singing.
The book is written in English and Spanish side by side, so children can hear both languages honored on the page. Language is treated as heritage, not translation — abuela's words, the island's sounds, and a family's rhythms belong in the story exactly as they are.
Mami's Coquí Song pairs naturally with read-alouds, family engagement nights, counseling small groups, and units on identity, family, and feelings. Educators use it to open conversations about memory and loss in a gentle, culturally grounded way.
Brenda began writing this story before her mother passed away, not knowing how deeply meaningful it would become. Finishing it became a calling — a way to honor her mother's legacy, their Puerto Rican heritage, and the cultural memories that shape who we are.
